On Thursday, March 5, members were able to visit the state capitol building in Springfield.Their purpose was to represent the FFA by giving out gift baskets and learning as much about Illinois politics as possible.
To start off, members were given the opportunity to talk to their new state representative, Tim Butler. They were given the opportunity to ask questions and get to know some things about him.
Students were then given an opportunity to get a picture with the governor (available on the Facebook or Twitter page) before being sorted into groups to hand out lunches to the secretaries of legislators. Through this they got to see first hand what daily life on the job looks like for an Illinois congressman as well as admire the capitol building itself.
To end their trip, Athens attended a session of the House where they were able to see their lawmakers in action. Visiting on the house floor was US Senator Dick Durbin, giving them a taste of not only state politics, but national politics as well.
Most importantly, attendees put out a positive image of agricultural education. This is important due the proposed legislation to cut ag ed funds. By going to Ag Legislative Day, we were able to show our state politicians that this funding is important to our state.
